V Refresh – Blackcurrant & Yuzu
I always get excited about new V flavours and specifically in this case, about their new refresh flavours, but then I remember that refresh is always a zero sugar option. I haven’t had good luck with the taste of artificial sweetener recently.
I really do like sugar and I don’t think that the artificial sweeteners that we have currently are close enough to sugar. There is always that weird after taste that kind of ruins things for me.
But then I see others swilling this stuff down and see that drink manufacturers continue to produce zero sugar drinks, so it must be selling well.
I have heard it said that depending on one’s taste bud palette, some people can’t taste the bitterness as strongly as others. And of course, I have indeed found beverages that have been zero sugar and still tasted good to me – they have been in the minority but I do enjoy finding those rare gems.
On to this one: I know what blackcurrant is – it is that sh1t that Ribena is made from and I think I heard of a Yuzu before, but I haven’t a clue what that might be, a fruit probably.
Passing this perplexing problem to the research team has revealed that a Yuzu is indeed a fruit that hails from Eastern Asia. It is a yellow citrus fruit that is believed to have originated in China as a hybrid of a mandarin orange and a Ichang papeda. Yeah, I didn’t know what that is either – it is also called Citrus cavaleriei and I guess it is a lemon or a lime or some sh1t. We are only interested in Yuzu today tho, – it is supposed to taste aromatic and tart, like a grapefruit or lemon.
This V Refresh flavour tastes very much like berries. It reminded me of something and it took me 4 days to realise the flavour I was reminded of was those chewable vitamin C tablets in ‘berry’ flavour. I actually liked it. Also the sweeteners (erythritol and sucralose) blended well with the flavours and I hardly tasted enough of the less palatable qualities of these sweeteners to care.
Decent.
