It was sh1tting down with rain all last weekend and as I spent the hours staring, depressed, out the window, the clouds parted slightly and a single beam of sunlight illuminated a billboard on the side of a passing bus. It simply read: “SubDog’ from Subway
Careful not to let the door hit me on the way out, I darted between the droplets of rain until I arrived under the awning of a nearby Subway restaurant. I enquired of the staff within the nature of a SubDog.
“Pardon me good sir, but what exactly is SubDog?”
Too late I realised my mistake as a wry grin spread across the purveyor’s face.
“Nothing man, What’Sub with you?”
Howls of laughter rose from the back room as the hilarious comedian laughed loudly into my reddened face. Other staff members ran out pointing and laughing and hooting and high 5ing. One of them used a white board marker to make another making on the board that proudly hung behind them.
I had been the 17th victim that day.
After the staff explained the joke and helped me wipe the tears from my face with a Subway branded serviette they offered to make me a SubDog of my very own.
Turns out a SubDog is actually a hot dog made in the style of a subway sandwich with frankfurter(s)in it. It specifically comes toasted and with cheese, onion, capsicum and jalapenos but it was explained to me that I could get other sh1t on it too, if I so chose.
Half expecting to be ridiculed again I timidly got some pickles on it, because there was no relish, but super happy to see Subway now have ketchup and mustard, which I imagine you would also be allowed to put on nonSubDog sandwiches, if you asked them real nice.
The subdog was so perfect – a standard (2) hot frankfurters were just enough on the toasted till crispy bread and with the tangy toppings it was lifted to higher quality than the hotdogs I am used to having and pricing below a normal subway sandwich instead of novelty, limited time price, was exactly right. This just worked.
