Whittakers – Oat Milk Chocolate

Whittaker’s – Oat Milk Chocolate

Alright, so I am a little late to the party, as they say, but This has stirred enough attention that the masses have demanded that I have a look into.

About two weeks ago, with much press and fan fare, Whittaker’s released a plant based chocolate using Oat Milk. We have limited space here in the Instagram caption so, let’s start straight away with that:

I have seen a few claiming that Whittaker’s were not using ‘oat milk’ but just oats
– It very definitely says ‘Oat Milk Chocolate’ on the front of the packaging, but reading the packaging very carefully, on the back it says: “To make our Oat Milk Chocolate we add lightly toasted Harraways South Island Oats into our refiner alongside our premium Rain forest Alliance Certified Ghanaian cocoa.”

So does pouring some oats into your chocolate refiner count as making Oat Milk Chocolate? Well I (and it seems I am not alone in this) assumed oat milk was made by milking oats, but turns out that oats do not produce milk as they are not mammalian. OK, so obviously it is just called milk and is made by squeezing or pressing the ‘milk’ out of fresh (not dried) oats right?

Nope, wrong again research team has informed me that oat milk is actually made by adding oats (usually rolled oats) to water and blending the sh1t out of it until it takes on a milky consistency. So yeah, as long as there is some moisture used in the refiner, I am totally going to accept this method as producing Oat Milk Chocolate.

The second controversy I observed folk arguing about was that this didn’t actually taste any good. This is usually something I feel more in my element talking about, but, full disclosure, I am no expert in the world of plant based foodstuffs.

This tasted like oats, strongly of oats. The dark chocolate was strong enough to have a presence, but mostly it tasted like oats. I actually like oats, so that isn’t a problem in itself, but it seems to have disappointed a lot of folk who were placing hopes on this tasting more authentic being an amazing plant based chocolate option. The texture doesn’t really have the creamy consistency I would’ve expected and actually comes across a little dry in my opinion.

I hate rating this so low, because I like it, but doesn’t quite accomplish what it set out to do so imo.

Milk it – 4/10
