McDonalds – El Maco

Another one of these limited time, here today gone tomorrow, returning on rotation, marketing ploys that create a false sense of scarcity driving us consumers into a buying frenzy as human nature takes over and we become as wild beasts fighting over dwindling resource for survival.

The El  ̶M̶a̶r̶k̶o̶  *oops* Maco is one of many items that keep appearing on the @mcdonaldsnz menu for a limited time and then reappearing years or so after they are no longer available. Other favourite McD items on perpetual rotation include the Kiwiburger, famously, the McRib and recently that Schezwan sauce for dipping your McNuggets in that I never got to try and am still unreasonably bitter about.

I remember having this El Maco sh1t many moons ago and I recall it as being pretty good. It has been so long that I can’t even remember what was on it. Salsa or some sh1t. A sombrero maybe? 🤔

Research team tells me that El Maco is a Big  ̶M̶a̶r̶k̶   -Mac *dammit* with salsa, crispy jalapenos, sour cream, cheese, tomato and some lettuce, but no sombrero. No sombrero? Sh1t! What was I thinking of then?

The El Maco was pretty damn good, actually. It really did taste of Mexican, at least whatever food stuffs are labelled as Mexican way over here. Salsa was mildly spicy and I got a strong flavour of cumin that always goes along with Mexican food in my mind. Tomato and lettuce was abundant, which normally I don’t like too much of in a burger, but the ‘fresh’ vegetable flavor it added is another thing I expect from anything ‘Mexican’.

I thought the disgusting shrivelled up looking green things were some sort of nightmarish corn chip at first, but after I fearfully ate some and realized it was some crispy dried jalapeno chip sort of sh1t, I was on board with them too.

Yeah, this came together in a burger quite well. The El Maco successfully replicated the taste of Mexican food, complete with cumin flavoured burps for the rest of the evening. I only tried the beef one, but chicken is also available.

Shout out to the El Maco Shaker Fries too, seasoning was ample – not too spicy, just tasty.

buena hamburguesa – 7/10
