Found these the other day and as I have enjoyed other wasabi derived snackstuffs thought it could be worth a lark. As I was writing this shit out, @peachynancy mentioned a Heartland Chips version of the same flavour out there somewhere and was so positive about it, that I feel I must try to track that one down in the future. But for now, you all get to hear about the ETA version.
ETA has placed the fact, prominently on the pack, that they have won the right to be official chips of the NZ Team for The Olympics in Tokyo this year (if it goes ahead…) – this is indeed a sought after title as everyone knows Olympic athletes go through approximately 75% of their body weight in chips per day, while they are preparing for big events. Actually, I feel less like doing anything after eating a bag of chips, but what the hell do I know? I have never successfully placed in any physical competition in my entire life.
They chips smelt of wasabi as I opened the pack. I had anticipated this, of course as my experience in eating all kinds of shit has given me an uncanny kind of 6th sense in these types of things. One thing I can pass on to you all is that a snack should smell a bit like the flavour listed on the packet. There you go, that one is for free.
And my mysterious powers of deductions didn’t end there. The first chip tasted so strongly of wasabi that it blew my sinus clean. Yes, I had anticipated this too, that is why I sampled one chip first instead of jamming fistfulls of chips into my face.
Something I hadn’t anticipated was that the second chip I inserted into my eating slot tasted of nothing, well maybe like a ready salted chip. Flavour was very subtle. Further experiments revealed the best way to maximise the enjoyment of these: The only way to get the perfect flavour level is to play the law of averages and stick the largest sample size possible into your mouth so that the flavours average out to the correct balance.
.
Not a bad entry here from ETA, not only have they captured the wasabi flavour nicely, I can also detect a hint of mayo too.
Wasa B+ – 8/10
