Look what kimmy_in_gissy sent me last week: 55% Cocoa Organic Fair Trade Dark Raspberry Chocolate from trade_aid .
I am pretty familiar with chocolate at this stage, but as of yet I have never heard of a dark raspberry. There is such a thing as a black raspberry I am told, which is very similar to a blackberry, but different in taste and most definitely still a raspberry. Is dark raspberry a variant of that? I am going to have a look at these raspberries for myself in a bit, but first what is Fair Trade?
Remember back at school, during lunch time when you would trade a tiny packet of weevil infested Shapes crackers for your friends delicious freshly made pickled onion sandwich? Well it isn’t like that at all. Fair trade is a concept which certifies that a ‘fair price’ is paid for products that are exported from ‘developing’ countries to ‘developed’ countries. The goals are as follows Firstly – customers and producers are brought together in a fairer partnership. Secondly – increased equality in the transfer of wealth between nations. And finally – profitable production allows for more sustainable and efficient development than throwing charity and aid at farmers.
Does it work? I don’t know, not my area of expertise, unfortunately. Sounds feasible though. In a nutshell, convince folk from developed nations to pay a fair price for product that hasn’t sucked all the resources from a developing nation for shit all money.
Now back to my comfort zone, does this shit work as a chocolate bar? Yup, sure does. The chocolate was delicious and rich and smooth, not quite buttery but, what does the packet say? Velvety? Yeah ok, velvety. Those farmers in Peru, Ecuador, and Dominican Republic seem to grow a fine bean. Though the chocolate was dark, I am sad to say the raspberries were not. Just normal freeze dried raspberries adding a sweet delicious, tangy bite to contrast the dark chocolate.
If I go chocolate, I definitely prefer the less sweet dark variety and throw some fruit in for good measure? Sure, sounds fair enough…. Fair thee well – 8/10
